MPO Polarity, Gender, and Fiber Mapping Checklist
An MPO line item must describe the optical path, not just the connectors. A working system needs a consistent architecture from transceiver through trunk, adapter, cassette or harness, and duplex or parallel-optics interface.

Define the system architecture
State whether the link uses base-8, base-12, or another fiber-count architecture and whether it supports parallel optics, duplex breakout, migration cassettes, or a combination. Include the transceiver interfaces at both ends.
List every element in order: equipment cord or harness, adapter, trunk, cassette, module, duplex patching, and final equipment interface. This sequence exposes where polarity and gender changes can occur.

Record polarity, gender, and keying
Specify Method A, B, or C where applicable, but do not use the method name as the only instruction. Record pinned or unpinned gender, key-up or key-down orientation, adapter type, and pin-1 position at each connection.
Verify that two pinned connectors are not mated and that every interface has one alignment-pin side where the system requires it. Cassettes, harnesses, and equipment ports may impose a specific gender.

Issue an end-to-end fiber map
The drawing should show each input fiber and its output position after every trunk, cassette, harness, and adapter. For duplex breakouts, show transmit and receive positions and the duplex-port numbering.
Include connector labels, cassette identifiers, panel positions, rack locations, and destination names. A production label schedule should use the same identifiers as the installation drawing and test report.
Confirm optical and mechanical acceptance
Set standard-loss or low-loss component expectations from the complete link budget. Count connectors, adapters, cassettes, splices, and engineering margin before assigning a maximum value to one assembly.
Define fiber type, test wavelength, insertion-loss method, end-face inspection, report fields, pulling eye, trunk diameter, fan-out length, crush protection, and packaging orientation.
